The renowned Spanish brand of handmade porcelain, Lladró, has created a limited-edition sculpture dedicated to the Karabakh horse, one of the most venerated symbols of Azerbaijan. This project stands as a profound homage to the nation's traditions and its cultural heritage, where the image of the horse has always held a place of special distinction.
The sculpture was first unveiled in Baku in the spring of 2024. It was subsequently showcased at the annual Maison&Objet exhibition in Paris that September, where it became a part of Lladró's international collection presentation.
In this interpretation, the Karabakh horse is an emblem of strength, endurance, and nobility. Lladró's artists sought to capture the breed's spirited character and stately grace. The work is distinguished by its meticulous anatomical detail, attention to the profile and expressive gaze, and a sense of dynamism in the silhouette. These qualities render the figure both recognizable and emotionally compelling.
Each piece is handcrafted at the Lladró manufactory in Valencia. The finish employs warm, coppery-brown enamel tones that replicate the natural color of a bay horse. The metal elements of the saddlery are fashioned from gilded brass, while the reins are crafted from genuine leather. Exquisite attention has been paid to the traditional Karabakh blanket – the chul – which, in Azerbaijani tradition, is draped over the horse's back beneath the saddle. Its intricate patterns echo the "Bulud", "Charkh", and "Bodjak" motifs characteristic of ancient Azerbaijani carpets.
Each sculpture bears a unique serial number, attesting to its authenticity. The edition is limited to only 750 pieces, and following its Baku premiere, the Karabakh horse swiftly became a bestseller in the local market, earning acclaim from both collectors and connoisseurs of national art.
Lladró remains steadfast in its commitment to artisanal craftsmanship and bespoke finishing, collaborating with masters who uphold the brand's exacting standards while evolving its artistic language for a new audience.
